Kartik maas is considered to be the most auspicious of all months. It is said in the scriptures that the results of any spiritual or devotional activity performed in this holy month would multiply by a thousand times. Kartik is also known as the month of 'Damodara', as it commemorates the sweet childhood pastime of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna being bound to a mortar by Mother Yashoda. Devotees cherish this lila, as it displays Lord Krishna's infinite affection and love for His beloved devotees. 'Dama' refers to a rope, and 'udara' refers to the belly. As Lord Krishna was bound with a rope by Mother Yashoda, He is also called 'Damodara'. Remembering this pastime, the devotees offer ghee lamps to Lord Damodara in the evening and sing a special song - 'Damodarashtakam'. The devotees also perform austerities and take vows like the damodara vrata in this month to make quick advancements in devotional life. Many travel to the holy land of Braj to execute their spiritual vows.
