Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the golden avatara of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, who appeared in Kaliyuga to benefit humanity and inaugurate the yuga dharma of chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended 500 years ago in the form of a devotee to set an ideal example and guide the society in the path of devotional service. Due to His beautiful golden complexion, He was fondly called ‘Gauranga’ by all. He was born to Sri Jagannatha Mishra and Mata Sachidevi in the city of Navadvipa in Bengal on Phalguni Poornima (the full moon day in Phalgun February–March) in 1486 AD. He was named Vishvambhara and also Nimai (Nimai, because he was born under a Neem tree).
Lord Chaitanya incarnated in the mood of Srimati Radharani to taste the sweet mellows of loving devotional service in the mood of separation (Vipralambha Rasa).
Bhakti or devotional service to the Supreme Lord is said to be rarely achieved and it is also renowned as the highest treasure in the vedic scriptures. Lord Chaitanya, who was glorified as ‘Maha Vadanyaya Avatara’ (The munificent incarnation of the Lord) distributed love of godhead or bhakti to all living entities without discrimination.
The essence of Lord Chaitanya’s teachings are as follows-
The Lord left only eight slokas of His instructions in writing, and they are known as the Siksastaka. All other literature based on His teachings were extensively written by the Lord’s principal followers, the six Gosvamis of Vrindavana, and their followers.
Generally when a big person goes to a particular place, he is accompanied by his close associates. Similarly, when the Supreme Lord Sri Chaitanya descends to the earthly planet, He is also accompanied by His close associates and dear devotees. He is accompanied by His associates like Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Acharya, Sri Gadadhara Pandit, Srivas Thakur and many associates who assist the Lord in His divine pastimes.
The pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu show His love and deep affection for His devotees. His pastimes are recorded in biographies such as Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita and Sri Chaitanya Bhagavata.
Lord Chaitanya’s ultimate mission is to bring respite to all the conditioned souls suffering in the ocean of material existence and give them the ultimate freedom from the cycle of birth and death through love of godhead. He made this possible by spreading the sankirtana movement, the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord.
